The multi-faceted Brittney Nicole disrupted the modeling industry when she appeared on the cover of NOW Weddings Magazine in February 2023. She is a Ford Model, digital content producer, humanitarian, and one of the Top 7 Sports Illustrated Swim Rookies of the Year. Please get to know Brittney as we discuss her modeling journey, becoming one of Sports Illustrated Rookie of the Year for 2024, and more.

John Bogen: What inspired you to pursue a career in modeling, and how did you get started?

Brittney Nicole: Growing up, I was always fascinated with fashion and its ability to express individuality and confidence. I initially wanted to become a fashion designer. My grandmother bought a sewing machine for me and taught me how to design clothes from different fabrics when I was younger.

It was when I began watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion shows that I started interested in modeling. I found inspiration in iconic models such as Naomi Campbell and Yasmeen Ghauri, who exuded grace, charisma, and confidence on the runway and in front of the camera.

My path to modeling began when I decided to turn my passion into a career this year. I leaped after serving eight years in the Navy, where discipline and physical fitness were paramount. The transition from a structured military lifestyle to the fluidity and creativity of the fashion industry was a challenge. Still, I was determined to explore this new chapter of my life.

My modeling journey started after connecting with industry professionals such as Rowena Kay McCormick Robinson of Chic Nouvelle and photographer John Merrit. I began networking and building my portfolio with some of the top photographers in New Orleans who shared their knowledge and expertise. I practiced my runway walk, perfected my poses, and honed my unique style.

John Bogen: Please share a bit about your background and journey to becoming a finalist for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Rookie of the Year.

Brittney Nicole: My journey began last year when my sister Destiny encouraged me to audition for Sports Illustrated Rookie of the Year. I was still working my 9-to-5 job, wondering if I wanted to continue doing corporate work or pursue modeling.

Destiny inspired me to believe in myself and pursue what I always wanted. We put the audition video together for SI and spent days editing it, ensuring it was perfect before submitting it.

John Bogen: When you do auditions like these, you never really think you’ll get selected out of thousands of girls; the competition is stiff, and all you can do is just put yourself out there.

Brittney Nicole: When I received the email from Sports Illustrated that selected me for the first round, I realized I could take this as far as possible. I started building my brand and poured all my energy into modeling and creating content.

John Bogen: How has being a finalist for Rookie of the Year impacted your modeling career?

Brittney Nicole: Being a finalist has opened doors I usually wouldn’t have been able to go through so early in my career. I was able to sign with Ford Models and collaborate with brands such as Dibs Beauty, Nadine Merabi, Oseree Swimwear, etc. It has also helped shape my personal development and growth. Being surrounded by so many empowering women has given me the motivation to want to become the very best at what I do. It’s lit a fire in me to want to keep going.

John Bogen: How do you handle the pressures and expectations of the modeling industry while maintaining a positive self-image?

Brittney Nicole: Maintaining a positive self-image in the modeling industry can be challenging, but having a solid support system is crucial. I surround myself with a good network of friends and family who encourage me to be authentic.

Recognizing perfection doesn’t exist and embracing my flaws has helped me on my self-love journey. I’m in my 30s, and I live to my standards and not the expectations of others. Be sure of yourself and what you stand for, and speak positive affirmations daily. The modeling industry can be harsh; you must believe you are enough before entering this world. I am glad I started modeling in my 30s instead of my 20s because I am very secure with myself as a woman despite any negativity I may receive.

John Bogen: What advice do you have for aspiring models looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Brittney Nicole: Embrace a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and maintain a self-care routine. It will help you improve physically and mentally. I always work out regularly. Before I decided to become a full-time model, I was training for a bikini competition. Fitness has been a massive part of my life and is even more critical now that I am in my 30s. Avoid habits that will hurt your body, such as alcohol and drugs. These habits not only affect your health but impact your appearance as well.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. I’ve been going to therapy for a few years, which has helped me tremendously. I’m someone who suffers from severe anxiety and depression, and if I let that get to me, it can control my life, so I try to talk to my therapist as often as I can. Stress-management techniques like meditation, yoga, or mindfulness help handle the pressures of day-to-day life.

Also, invest in a good skincare routine to maintain clear and healthy skin. Protect your skin from the sun with sunscreen. Use a good retinol and vitamin C serum daily.

John Bogen: Can you describe your typical fitness and wellness routine in preparation for swimsuit modeling?

Brittney Nicole: I start with a good morning routine; typically, I wake up and immediately do my skincare routine in the mornings. Once completed, I ensure I am hydrated and go to the gym. My workout routine varies. I usually incorporate a lot of strength training exercises to tone muscles, including weightlifting and resistance training. When I need to cut, I implement cardio workouts such as running, cycling, or swimming to burn calories and maintain stamina.

My diet consists of consuming lean proteins, vegetables, and whole grains for sustained energy. And I cheat whenever I feel like it. I usually don’t have any restrictions since my diet is mainly healthy options.

John Bogen: What can fans look forward to from you in the future?

Brittney Nicole: I’m working on developing myself as a well-known model in the industry. I want to take this as far as possible while I have the opportunity. But more importantly, I want to be influential and inspire women who have never thought they could model or pursue whatever dreams they want to go after. I want to be the person to tell you that you can do it.
